Just a few short weeks after arriving in LA, I have joined the Music Together teaching staff at Sunshine Music and Dragonfly DuLou, where I have also been recruited to teach youth improv classes beginning this Fall. With any luck finding voice students and singing work will follow suit. As a musician I enjoy the best of both worlds, working as a classical singer while also branching out into popular music genres. Although my roots are in opera, art song, and musical theatre, I’m always looking for new musical projects.

I recently completed my Music Together® Teacher Training in NYC and I’m thrilled to join the team of educators/advocates for this fantastic program. Music Together is a research-based and internationally recognized early childhood music program based on the philosophy that all children are inherently musical–they can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment fosters such learning.

I found the training to be rigorous, informative, and inspiring. I’m particularly excited about Music Together’s immersive approach to teaching music, emphasis on engaging both adults and children, and adaptability to the each teachers’ musical strengths and creativity. I know that I will make a great Music Together teacher, able to draw from my experiences as an educator, musician/singer, and improviser. I am currently pursuing Music Together teaching opportunities in Los Angeles, CA, my new home in just over a month.

For more information about this marvelous program, visit musictogether.com.

It is a long standing tradition within several Boston church communities to perform Part I of Handel’s Messiah in celebration of the Christmas season. (Many performances also include the Hallelujah Chorus from Part II.) The Congregational Church of West Medford’s Messiah Sing drew a modest but enthusiastic audience this year, comprised of members of the church community as well as many new faces. All were invited to lend their voice to the performance of this beautiful, moving, and challenging oratorio.

As the alto soloist, I performed two arias, “O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings to Zion” and “He Shall Feed His Flock Like a Shepherd,” joined by soprano Jodi Hitzhusen. I’ve shared the live recording here. As you listen be prepared to hear the near-comic timing of first a church bell, then a babbling baby, during my performance of “He Shall Feed His Flock Like a Shepherd.” Such is the phenomenon of live singing! I’ve decided to share the recording anyway, as it is one of my favorite arias to perform.
